Our Goal

Regardless of the stage of cancer, our goal at Beverly Hills Cancer Center is always to aim for a cure even if the odds are small. Our oncology specialists are happy to report that it is possible to achieve cures even for colon cancer patients with advanced stage disease.

Although advanced stage cancers are in many cases not curable, we have been able to successfully control the progression of many cancers, and to achieve long-term remissions for patients.

We also focus on supportive care, including bone health, diet, psychosocial needs and other issues that form the fabric of healing.

Again, our first goal is always to aim for a cure, and if cure is not an option, our task is:

  • to make each patient's cancer a chronic illness they can live with,
  • to help our patients live as normal a life as possible and
  • to help our patients thrive, even while undergoing treatment.

New Technology Is Providing Excellent Results For Cancer Patients

There have been some dramatic developments in the field of medical oncology in the last decade. Our oncology specialists have been able to develop numerous new treatment options for several cancers, and today we are able to offer several lines of treatment at our Los Angeles treatment center as opposed to only 1 or 2 lines of therapy in the recent past.

As a result, many of the common cancers, such as colon cancer, that had very limited systemic treatment options until very recently, can now be treated successfully even in the late stages of the disease with minimal side effects.

Chemotherapy: Individualized Treatment To Cure Your Cancer

While some of the treatment options for cancer patients are more standardized, in most situations we must be able to think outside of the box in order to create the optimal treatment regimen customized to each particular patient. Some of the recent chemotherapy techniques that we are employing with success in our relaxing Los Angeles treatment center include:

Genomics

The amazing success that we have had in the last few years for several types of common cancers is attributable to the success of the field of genomics ("genomics" is a branch of biology which studies and applies genetic mapping and DNA sequencing of genes to medicine).

By combining agents that target specific anomalies in cancer cells with traditional chemotherapy agents, we have seen significant and sustainable improvement for our patients.

All of this has been so extremely encouraging for the field of medical oncology that we are beginning to think of "incurable cancer" as a chronic disease that patients can live with, not unlike diabetes or arthritis.

DNA

Gene mapping allows our specialists to design a unique plan to treat your specific cancer.

Pathology

Exciting developments in the field of pathology have enhanced our ability to better identify the biology of a tumor for a specific patient. This allows us to individualize or personalize the treatment regimen for our patients, for many different types of cancer. Our patients are responding to the new treatments favorably more rapidly, obtaining remissions and even cures, and with fewer side effects.

The result is that today our cancer patients are able to live longer and to have a good quality of life while going through therapy. Many patients continue to maintain a normal lifestyle even while they are going through their individual treatment plan.

Metronomic Chemotherapy

"Metronomic" chemotherapy means that we arrange to deliver lower does of chemotherapy more frequently, often on a weekly basis, in order to have more of a sustained effect on the rapidly dividing cancer cells, and less toxicity for the normal cells.

Fasting Combined With Chemo

It's a relatively new concept, based on our understanding of your body's own chemistry. Your body's normal cells will become somewhat dormant and less active when you fast, while cancer cells will continue to metabolize and divide. The result is that if you fast for 24 hours prior to receiving chemotherapy, your normal cells will be less affected by the chemotherapy, and you will suffer less toxicity from the treatment, while your cancer cells will be destroyed by the chemotherapy.

This concept is being studied further by researchers, but the preliminary results are encouraging.

Immunotherapy: Attacking Cancer From Multiple Directions

Also called biological therapy or biotherapy, immunotherapy uses the body's immune system to combat cancer. This is an exciting and developing area in cancer research and treatment. We know that the immune system plays an important role in some cancers, and perhaps all cancers. For example, we know that immunotherapy has been used successfully to treat kidney cancers and melanomas.

Immunotherapy agents are used to attack cancer in one or more of three ways: they block the flow of blood to the cancer cells, they disrupt the communication between cancer cells, and they stimulate the body's immune system to attack the cancer cells.

Disrupting Cellular Communications

We have learned that by disrupting the communication of cancer cells with one another we can have a significant impact on treatment and response with some cancers.

For example, we have had significant success in the treatment of multiple myeloma (plasma cell myeloma) with immunotherapy agents such as Thalidomide and Revlimid. These are known to disrupt cellular communication as well as having other effects on cancer cells.

These communication-disrupting agents have also been shown to be effective in treating other types of cancer, either alone or when combined with other agents.

Interrupting The Blood Supply

Tumor growth is stopped or slowed when cellular communication is disrupted.

Interrupting The Blood Supply

Tumors require blood to grow, and operate by stimulating the body to grow and expand blood vessels to accommodate this "need." By interfering with or negating the growth and vitality of these blood vessels, tumor growth can be slowed or stopped, and immunotherapy often focuses on this aspect of treatment.

Interrupting Blood Supply Tumors

Tumors require a significant vascular structure in order to grow.

Hormonal Therapy

Hormone therapy is another form of therapy that is a body-wide or systemic treatment. It is most often used as an adjuvant or secondary therapy, after radiation or surgery, to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. It is commonly used in the treatment of breast and prostate cancers.
